Reviews

In this next section you’ll find more detailed reviews of all the blenders I shortlisted, taking in the pros and cons in each case.

Cuisinart CPB-380 Hurricane Compact Juicing Blender

Cuisinart’s Hurricane strikes a really good balance between value for money, performance and versatility.

It comes with a number of different containers, each one of which is designed for tackling very specific jobs.

Sale
Cuisinart CPB-380 Hurricane Compact Juicing...
  • 1+ peak HP; rotary dial controls - pulse, low & high. Cord length : 36 Inches
  • 32oz BPA-free Tritan jar
  • Removable blade assembly for easy cleaning

The main 32 ounce BPA free Tritan jar is where you’ll do the bulk of your bigger blending jobs. It’s not the biggest I’ve ever used, but I think it’s just about large enough for the average family household.

It also comes with a pair of travel cups, which I find useful when I want to prepare a couple of drinks in one sitting.

Even if you don’t plan to take them out with you right away, they store easily enough in the refrigerator. The lids do a good job of keeping the juice fresh for two or three days as well.

In addition to these cups, the Hurricane also comes with a smaller BPA free eight ounce chopping cup.

This does a pretty good job of other kitchen tasks like rough chopping small vegetables, or mincing herbs and spices.

The Hurricane offers quite a lot of versatility, although the speed settings aren’t much to write home about. They just about provide the bare minimum amount of control you’d like to see on an appliance like this.

The two manual speeds are accessed using a rotary dial interface located at the front of the machine. A low speed setting is ideal for working with softer fruits and vegetables, while the high speed is better for tougher ingredients.

Twist the dial over to the left, however, and you activate the pulse mode.

This lets you give the contents a very controlled burst of power, which is ideal when you want to achieve a specific consistency for things like salsas.

The Cuisinart Hurricane leans very much towards the “all-purpose blender” side of things. You can get a pretty good – albeit thick – healthy juice out of the thing, but I think you’ll find this more suitable if you drink more smoothies.

Pros

  • A versatile and affordable blender set.
  • Travel cups are useful for making a few drinks ahead of time.
  • Very simple controls, consisting of nothing more than a single dial.
  • An affordable set for those working to a strict budget.

Cons

  • A relatively small main jar that’s only just big enough for the average household.
  • Only a couple of speed options to work with.
  • Lids screw on in the opposite direction to that you’re used to!
  • Blades are tricky to separate for cleaning.

Comparison Specs

  • Size: 10.5 x 7.5 x 13.88 inches
  • Weight: 6.5 pounds
  • Motor Power: 500 Watts
  • Blending Capacity: 32 ounces (Jar) / 8 ounces (Chopping Bowl)
  • Speeds: Low / High / Pulse

Blendtec Total Classic Blender

There are two things you need to know about buying a Blendtec blender.

First of all, the company makes some of the best blenders in the business. The second thing to know is that they tend to be quite expensive as a result.

Sale

  • Elevate Your Blending Experience: High quality blender for smoothies, shakes, cocktail drinks, soups,...

  • Large batches BPA-free four-sided jar is a 75 ounce volume jar with 32 ounce blending capacity (wet or...

If you can justify the upfront investment though, they deliver outstanding results.

The Total Classic is one of my favorites from the company’s entire range, and it’s actually one of the more affordable Blendtec blenders.

Despite the comparatively low cost, you still get access to the kind of technical bells and whistles that people love about Blendtec.

The Total Classic, for example, comes with six different pre programmed settings for some of the most common kitchen tasks. There are also ten different manual speed settings to play with, which gives you an exceptional amount of control when you want to go more hands-on.

The jar that comes as standard with the Total Classic also has a maximum capacity of 75 ounces. That’s more than enough for even the thirstiest households, and provides lots of wiggle room for working on other prep work beyond juicing and smoothie-making.

The other thing that Blendtec is famous for is the quality of the blades. These, of course, are one of the most important elements of any blender juicer.

The stainless steel forged blades used here are actually deliberately dulled to aid the obliteration of the jar contents!

Although the base machine only comes with the standard jar, there is a collection of other blending containers that you can buy separately, as and when you want or need them.

None of these are strictly necessary to add to your collection. Still, they are useful upgrades if you find yourself focusing on one particular area of kitchen prep.

Finally, Blendtec offers some of the best warranties on the market.

The Total Classic comes with 8 years of comprehensive warranty protection. If you compare that to the standard 1 year warranty of other appliances, it makes the investment much easier to justify.

Overall I really like the Blendtec Total Classic. It offers the best of Blendtec’s technology at an affordable price, and tackles juices, delicious smoothies and other blends incredibly well.

(I’ve reviewed the Blendtec Total Classic Blender in more detail elsewhere on Viva Flavor if you’d like to learn more.)

Pros

  • A powerful 1500 Watt durable motor demolishes even the toughest ingredients.
  • 10 manual speeds provide plenty of hands-on control.
  • A particularly effective juicing blender, as even small seeds are completely pulverized.
  • Dulled blades crush the contents and provide years of good service without the need for re-sharpening.
  • An 8 year comprehensive warranty goes a long way to justifying the cost of this blender.
  • Makes juices, smoothies, salsas, hot liquids (ie soup), batters, soy milk and more.

Cons

  • Extremely loud, although that goes hand in hand with a powerful blender.
  • You need quite a high liquid content to effectively process frozen fruit and vegetables.
  • Operating manual is not particularly helpful or comprehensive.
  • The lid is quite tricky to fix in place securely.
  • One of the more expensive blenders in this round-up.

Comparison Specs

  • Size: 7.0 x 8.0 x 15.5 inches
  • Weight: 7.28 pounds
  • Motor Power: 1500 Watts
  • Blending Capacity: 75 ounces
  • Speeds: 10 / Pulse
  • Presets: 6
  • Dishwasher Safe: Removable parts
  • Warranty: 8 years

Oster Pro 1200 Glass Jar Blender

Oster’s carved out a great corner for itself in the market by producing a range of glass jar blenders.

Glass jars can be very useful if you want to avoid using any plastic in your food preparation kit, and they don’t build up scratches, stains or clouding over time.

Sale

  • Dual direction blade technology for extra blending power to chop and grind with precision extra wide...
  • 1200 power watts and 900 watts of ice crushing power

On the other hand, you have to be careful handling them for obvious reasons, and especially when you’re making messy juices!

They’re also heavy by comparison as well, so you really need a permanent home on your counter top.

This particular model is one of Oster’s most popular and it has a 1200 Watt powerful motor that can almost give Blendtec a run for its money.

That kind of power’s more than strong enough for making thick juices, and can tackle frozen fruits as well. It’s also backed up with extra wide blades, which help keep the contents flowing around the jar so you get a really even blend.

The Pro 1200 features a total of seven speeds, which provides ample flexibility for processing every kind of ingredient.

There are also three pre programmed settings for creating things like salsas, smoothies and milkshakes. You just add your ingredients to the jar, hit the appropriate button, and then get on with another chore while the Oster does the hard work.

If you need more manual control over the consistency, there is also a pulse button. Just keep this held down for as long as you want the machine to operate, then lift your finger to bring it to a halt.

As well as a generously sized 48 ounce main jar, the Pro 1200 also comes with a 24 ounce smoothie cup. I find that handy as I can make two servings in the main jar, then put one on chill for drinking later on.

Finally, the Oster Pro 1200 motor comes with an unusually generous 10 year limited warranty. Given the price of this thing, I think that makes it very easy to recommend as a budget pick.

Pros

  • Glass blending jar resists scratches, staining and clouding.
  • Plenty of speed settings, plus a handful of pre programmed settings.
  • 1200 Watt powerful motor on a budget blender.
  • Portable smoothie cup included alongside the main blender jar.
  • Generous warranty on the motor base.

Cons

  • Replacement parts can be hard to source if anything breaks.
  • Unstable on the counter top, and so it’s best held down while working at high speed!
  • Smoothie cup lid is quite hard to take off.
  • Another loud blender.
  • No measurement markings – one of the biggest selling points of a scratch-resistant glass jar!

Comparison Specs

  • Size: 8.5 x 10.15 x 13.9 inches
  • Weight: 7.0 pounds
  • Motor Power: 1200 Watts
  • Blending Capacity: 48 ounces (Jar) / 24 ounces (Smoothie Cup)
  • Speeds: 7 / Pulse
  • Presets: 3
  • Dishwasher Safe: Removable parts
  • Warranty: 10 years (Motor base)

NutriBullet Blender Combo 1200 Watt

NutriBullet’s one of the biggest names in the world of blending and smoothie-making. This little combo kit is one of its most popular.

Like the Oster Pro it packs a 1200 Watt motor base, which can tackle even tough ingredients with ease.

  • Includes: (1) 1200W motor base, (1) 64 oz blender with lid and vented lid cap, (1) Tamper, (1) 32 oz cup,...

Unlike the Oster though, you have a much more generous main blending jar. This has a maximum capacity of 64 ounces, although it’s made of BPA free plastic rather than glass.

Using the NutriBullet’s pretty easy, as every power option is laid out clearly in a single horizontal row.

There are low, medium & high speed settings for handling different ingredients, as well as a pulse button for manual blending.

The NutriBullet is most famous for making smoothies, although thicker juices are very achievable and you can also use this combo set for soups as well.

When you’re making single servings, you can also fix the dedicated cup – with blades – onto the base, and whizz away. It’s a very easy way to get a quick drink together, and is useful when you’re in a rush and need a drink to take with you on the go.

Everything’s constructed from BPA free plastic, and as a result you can put all of the removable parts in the dishwasher. Overall it’s a very simple blender to both use and care for.

If you need some inspiration, the NutriBullet set also comes with a recipe book. You’ll have no trouble finding juice and green smoothie recipes online these days, but I always think it’s nice when you’re given plenty of inspiration to use your shiny new appliance!

Overall I think the NutriBullet Blender Combo is a very versatile appliance that tackles a lot of the most common kitchen blending tasks. It outperforms the Oster in my opinion, although it does come at a higher price tag.

On the subject of price and longevity, you only get a standard 1 year warranty. That’s not exactly unusual, but it’s something to be aware of before you invest in this one.

Pros

  • Simple to use with clear controls, making it a great option for beginners.
  • Single-serve blending jar makes small batch blending very convenient.
  • A personal blender and a traditional blender in one appliance.
  • Recipe book provides some great inspiration, right out of the box.
  • Motor base suction cups keep it really stable on the counter top.

Cons

  • Limited 1 year warranty.
  • No pre programmed settings for tackling common tasks.
  • Can jam if overfilled with ice cubes when you’re making frozen drinks.
  • Another very loud blender, even at the lowest speed setting.
  • Blades can be tricky to get at for cleaning.

Comparison Specs

  • Size: 8.07 x 7.75 x 16.97 inches
  • Weight: 11.13 pounds
  • Motor Power: 1200 Watts
  • Blending Capacity: 64 ounces (Jar) / 32 ounces (Cup) / 24 ounces (Cup)
  • Speeds: 3 / Pulse
  • Presets: No
  • Dishwasher Safe: Removable parts
  • Warranty: 1 year

Ninja BN801 Professional Plus Kitchen System

You can think of this Ninja blender as a more advanced version of the Cuisinart Hurricane set I reviewed earlier on in this guide.

At 1400 Watts, the motor base on this thing is second only to the Blendtec Total Blender and does a really good job of chewing through very tough ingredients like frozen fruits and vegetables.

Ninja’s custom “Total Crushing Blades” also utilize that power to devastating effect, which means even tough stuff is processed in a very short amount of time.

The main container on the BN801 has a maximum capacity of 72 ounces, which again is only slightly smaller than the Blendtec’s. It’s very family-friendly in terms of processing size.

As well as the main container you also get a pair of 24 ounce single-serve cups with lids. You can either fix these cups directly onto the base with their own separate blade unit, or make three drinks with the main container and put the other two on chill.

Finally, the BN801 also comes with a very effective 64 ounce chopping bowl. You should switch to this when you’re making salsas, for example, as you get a much more even consistency when you work in smaller batches.

In terms of presets, the BN801 features five of Ninja’s Auto-IQ programs. Once you’ve added your ingredients, you just select your program and the Ninja intelligently blends the contents in a series of optimized cycles.

Like the NutriBullet, you also get a primitive recipe book with the BN801. This provides plenty of inspiration, covering all of the main features of this kitchen system.

Everything’s very easy to clean too, as all of the removable parts are made from BPA free plastic and are dishwasher safe. Just remember to give that motor base a good wipe down with a damp cloth after each use.

I think this is a very clever little all-in-one system that covers lots of different kitchen prep jobs and makes a mean fruit juice too.

Pros

  • Auto IQ settings tackle the common blending jobs really well.
  • Strong motor and blade system at a mid-range price.
  • All the blending bowls you need for tackling a wide variety of food processor tasks.
  • Very easy to use and care for.

Cons

  • Not as robust and hard-wearing as other appliances in the Ninja range.
  • Ice can get stuck to the sides of the main jar, requiring a little manual mixing mid-blend.
  • One of the noisiest kitchen blending sets on the market – even allowing for the power.
  • Cleaning can be tricky as food has a tendency to clog up in the covers.

How To Buy A Juicer Blender

The next section’s going to be quite a long one, but worth reading through if you plan to continue your own research.

In it, I’m going to talk about the fundamental differences between juicing and blending, and what that means when it comes to choosing the right blender for you.

Juicing Vs Blending – What’s The Difference?

In a nutshell, the most important difference between the two is how they process your favorite fruits and vegetables you want to turn into a drink.

Blenders…well, blend whatever you put inside them. The pulp, the skin (if you haven’t removed it), and the moisture locked up inside the produce. Basically, whatever goes into a blender ends up in the final drink.

Juicers, on the other hand, work hard to squeeze just the juice out of your fruits. They’ll often automatically eject the remaining pulp into a separate bin designed for this purpose too.

With a blender, you tend to get a much thicker drink, containing all of that pulp, seeds and skin content.

If it’s a very good blender, you won’t notice any kind of gritty texture. Those seeds, for example, will be blitzed along with everything else.

It’s a question of personal taste really.

There’s another way of looking at this though. A juice drink you make in a blender is typically more nutritious. You keep all of the fiber from the pulp and skin, after all, and assuming you haven’t removed anything before blending.

Let’s summarize the differences quickly before moving on:

Juicing

  • A juicer separates the liquid from all other parts of your fruits and vegetables.
  • You get a drink that’s lighter and has a thinner consistency.
  • You don’t get as much fiber due to the separation. If you’re reducing your fiber intake that might actually be a bonus.
  • A juicer typically gets better results from ingredients like leafy greens.

Blending

  • Produces a thicker drink.
  • Easier to add whole fruit to a concoction which reduces prep time.
  • More fiber is added to the juice.
  • Blenders provide more versatility, which means you can tackle all kinds of drink consistencies.
  • Good for rough chopping and preparing things like salsas, nut butter, purees and baby food.
  • More suitable for meal replacement drinks.

In the next few sections, I’m going to cover some of the most important design elements that really matter when you’re choosing a juicer blender combo.

The Power Of The Blender

Along with the quality of the blades, this is the most important consideration when you’re shopping around.

If you’re only going to be juicing very soft fruits and vegetables with your blender, you can get away with a much weaker motor. Somewhere around 1,000 Watts of power is a good baseline to aim for here.

What if you want to juice tougher stuff with your blender though? Carrot juice is a popular option, but it can give weaker motors too much of a workout.

In this case, I think you should aim for a motor rating that’s closer to 1500 Watts.

As a general rule of thumb, I’d recommend opting for the most powerful motor you can stretch your budget to. If it has overload protection it’s even better, but be aware that a quiet motor is a very hard thing to find.

There’s nothing worse than buying a shiny new kitchen appliance, only to realize you’ve outgrown it after just a few months of use. It’s a real waste.

The Quality Of The Blade Units

Second only to the power of the motor is the quality of the blades. No matter how powerful your motor might be, it’s only as good as the actual blending unit.

You’ve got a few options here.

Some blenders come with separate blade units that are designed for tackling different jobs. It’s worth keeping an eye out for one that comes with an extractor blade unit.

These do a much better job of juice extraction, and are a big selling point when you’re shopping around for this sort of machine.

Whatever blender you choose in the end, make sure it has high quality stainless steel blades that are built to last. Blenders put their blade units under tremendous pressure, after all.

What Quantities Will You Work With?

If you’ve decided on your power rating and blade options, the next thing to think about is the capacity of the blending pitcher

Naturally, you’ll need a bigger jar if you want to make a week’s worth of juice at the weekend.

If, on the other hand, you’re happy to whip up a juice as and when you need it, there’s money to be saved.

There are some fantastic single serve personal blenders on the market that are extremely affordable. They often come with dedicated blade units for tackling different jobs, and travel cups that double up as the blending pitcher

Do You Need Those Extra Features?

Using a blender to make juice isn’t a very complicated thing, but there are some basic controls you’ll want access to.

A low and a high speed option are essential when you want to switch between soft and hard fruits and vegetables. A pulse setting can also be a godsend when you want to achieve a very specific texture.

If you’re happy to take a very hands-on approach with your juicer blender combo, that will be enough.

It can be very useful to look at blenders that come with helpful presets though. These allow you to add your ingredients, hit a button, and then do something else while you wait for your juice to finish.

Some blenders even have clever tech that detects the type of produce you’re working with, and adjusts the performance automatically.

As you’ve probably already guessed though, this sort of extra tech comes with a significantly higher price tag.

As always it’s a question of balancing what you need right now, with what you might need in the future, and then weighing that up against the budget you’re working with.

Does It Have A Juicer Attachment?

This is obviously a big consideration when you’re looking for a juicer blender combo.

You won’t get the same results as you would from a dedicated juicing machine, but some blenders come with a specially designed juicer attachment.

These help you blend your fruit and vegetables into a container, while the juice itself is directed elsewhere.

Is It Easy To Clean?

Keeping your kitchenware clean is the best way to get more out of your investment in the long run. With that in mind, it’s important to check how easy your juicer blender combo is to clean.

It’s actually very difficult to find a juicer blender that doesn’t feature dishwasher safe parts these days. It’s such an essential selling point that the manufacturers will put it front and center in the product description.

A number of blenders also feature something called a self-cleaning mode, although to be honest this is something you can replicate without a preset.

Just fill the blender to the halfway point with warm water, add a few splashes of kitchen detergent, and then blitz the contents.

Voila! That will get 90% of the grime off the insides of the container, as well as the blade unit (where food grub loves to hide).

Still, you’ll want to be able to throw as much through the dishwasher as you can for maximum convenience.

As for the motor base, just get into the habit of wiping it down with a damp cloth after each use.

Juicing – and blending – can be a messy business, and you want to avoid letting food clog up behind the buttons.

What Materials Are Used?

As a general rule of thumb, the more stainless steel that’s used in the construction of your blender, the better.

The parts that come into contact with food should ideally be constructed from BPA free plastic. This prevents any chemicals leaking into your juice concoctions over time.

Like the dishwasher-safe consideration I’ve already outlined, this is an extremely common kitchenware design element.

Still, it’s worth looking out for on the product listing. It’s usually displayed very clearly!

Does It Feature Any Safety Mechanisms?

We all like to think of ourselves as supremely sensible people, but accidents are called accidents for a reason.

A lot of high quality brands will add certain safety features to their products to provide extra peace of mind.

Think overheating protection tech which stops the unit burning up, or locking mechanisms that prevent activation until everything’s securely in place.

I consider this sort of thing to be a matter of bonus features more than anything else. It’s much more important to get the other elements right, but give preference to a juicer blender combo that has extra protection built-in.

How Long – And Comprehensive – Is The Warranty?

We all know that a longer warranty is a better warranty. Unsurprisingly, the longest warranties are typically found on the more expensive blenders.

If you’re operating at the budget end of the market, anything over a year can be considered a big plus.

For more premium blenders, it’s not uncommon to find 10 or even 15 year warranties.

Not all long warranties are created equal, however.

Check the small print to see what the limitations are. Does it cover accidental damage, or just general wear and tear? Is the warranty strictly limited to domestic use?

No one’s trying to trick you, exactly! It’s more a case of making sure that you’re going to use the blender in the manner that’s intended by the manufacturer, and making sure you stay on the right side of the line.

Frequently Asked Questions

To wrap things up, I wanted to answer some of the most common questions people have about juicing with a blender.

What’s The Best Juicer Blender Combo?

Based on my reviews and the buying guide I’ve written for this article, there are three blenders that I consider to be the best for juicing:

  • Blendtec Total Classic Blender – This is one of the best blenders for juicing overall, thanks to a motor that obliterates even the tiniest seeds to ensure a surprisingly smooth texture to your blender juice. Although it’s a professional grade blender, it’s surprisingly affordable.
  • Oster Pro 1200 Glass Jar Blender – If you only need a small juicer blender, the Oster Pro 1200 packs a surprisingly hefty punch at a great value price tag. It’s a great blender that won’t break the bank.
  • Ninja BN801 Professional Plus Kitchen System – I found this to be the best all-in-one juicer blender combo set if you also want to tackle other food processor tasks.

Can You Really Use A Blender For Juicing?

Yes! You just need to accept that the end result is going to be a little bit different from a dedicated juicer.

For a start, the texture won’t be the same. The blending process means your juices will be naturally thicker*, due to all that extra pulp and peel that’s included in the mix.

You’ll also find that blender juices don’t last as long in the refrigerator. That’s because blenders work at incredibly high speeds, which introduce a lot of heat and oxygen to the drink.

If you’re really serious about this side of kitchen life though, then you’ll likely want to explore buying a dedicated juicer for juicing fruits.

For most of us though, who just want to increase their daily juice intake, a good blender will get the job done perfectly well.

(*You can always strain your blender juice through a sieve as well. That will get rid of some of the extra thickness.)

Is A Juicer Better Than A Blender?

For making juice and nothing but juice? Certainly.

You’ll get less pulp in the drink, and a good slow masticating juicer will achieve extremely high yields too. That’s great for your grocery budget.

We don’t all have the luxury of having enough countertop space (or budget) for two kitchen appliances though.

As with all things in the kitchen it’s a balancing act. If you’re really into home juicing, you’ll find a way to accommodate a dedicated machine.

If you’re performing blending tasks first and foremost though, use my buying guide to find the best blender that can also turn out an excellent juice.

Can A Vitamix Blender Juice?

Yes, and in fact if you’re lucky enough to own a Vitamix or a Blendtec blender you’re in a very good position.

These blenders are famed for their incredibly powerful motors and rock-solid blade design.

Whether blending fruits or working with hard vegetables, you can make a juice drink with one of these blenders in record time.

They’re also very good at blitzing any seeds in the produce. These can often add a gritty mouthfeel to a juice drink that some people find unpleasant.

Can You Use A Blender To Make Vegetable Juice?

Different vegetables present different challenges to every blender.

A sub-1000 Watt motor will have no trouble tackling very soft vegetables, for example.

If you’re working with tougher stuff like carrots though, you’ll benefit from owning a more powerful blender. Something around the 1500 Watt power mark is a good target to aim for.

Whichever blender you choose, it’s important to remember that whatever goes in….comes out! None of the rougher elements will be separated from the juice itself, so it’s a case of all or nothing here.

It’s just something to be aware of if you’re not a fan of thicker juicer drinks.
